The devil is in the details: addressing the overlooked potential of sub-gene level analysis

Assistant Professor
The Technical University of Denmark

Kristoffer Vitting-Seerup, Assistant Professor, Institute for Health Technology, Technical University of Denmark, has received a fellowship totaling DKK 10 million from the Lundbeck Foundation.

The human genome is like a blueprint for the human body. It contains around 20,000 genes that create different proteins that are essential for life. Most of these genes can create different versions of proteins, called "protein isoforms". These different versions have different functions in the body, like different tools in a toolbox.

Isoforms are however largely overlooked in modern biology, meaning we currently lack an important part of the picture of why diseases develop. With this 5-year grant, Kristoffer will establish his own research group at DTU Health Technology where he aims to inspire and enable scientists to harvest this treasure trove of unused potential leading to both significant improvements of existing treatments, and the development of new therapies.
