Good Gut Feelings – a surprising way to avoid protein misfolding and neurodegenerative disease

Associate Professor

Neurodegenerative diseases are a tremendous and growing societal burden with few treatment options available. Thus, there is an urgent need for strategies to prevent and treat neurodegenerative diseases. With this project we propose that we can treat neurodegenerative diseases with the help of human microbiotas.
We have identified a microbial community from a healthy human that protects against amyloid-β induced toxicity in a C. elegans model for Alzheimer’s disease. Understanding the molecular mechanisms by which this microbial community offers protection to the host can lead to novel ways of preventing protein misfolding in neurodegenerative diseases.
