Lundbeck Foundation launches global platform about the brain

Neurotorium

At Neurotorium.org, health professionals, researchers and science enthusiasts from all over the world can learn about the brain and its diseases – and download articles, images and presentations for free.

 Go To Neurotorium

With Neurotorium, Lundbeck Foundation is commencing a new chapter in the story of our marvellous brain and reaching out to scientists, educators, students and health professionals. The platform will make knowledge about the brain and its diseases freely available to all.

Health professionals will be able to update their knowledge of various disease areas and their basic knowledge of the brain and central nervous system.

“With Neurotorium, Lundbeck Foundation has established a unique online platform that facilitates access to major discoveries and the latest knowledge about cerebral diseases. It is particularly relevant for clinicians in psychiatry and neurology, and for those educating the bright minds of tomorrow. We hope that the platform will become the place where academics from universities as well as researchers from the commercial world will share their data and knowledge for the benefit of clinicians, and thereby also for patients and society,” says Jan Egebjerg, Senior Vice President, Grants & Prizes at Lundbeck Foundation.

Inspiration for education

One of the aims of Neurotorium is to provide free and easy access to high-quality materials which will support the teaching and dissemination of knowledge about the brain and its disorders. The platform is a help for teachers and scientists, who can freely download materials, presentations and illustrations from the website.

“I know how many hours you can waste trying to source good material for your teaching. Often you find yourself having to make compromises, or skirting the legal boundaries of copyright. With Neurotorium, we provide a unique, free resource for anyone teaching neurology, psychiatry or neuroscience. The content is of the highest quality and is continuously updated, curated and reviewed by leading international experts,” says Maria Nordfang, Scientific Programme Director for Neurotorium, Lundbeck Foundation.

A tour of the brain with a 3D Brain Atlas

One of the attractions of Neurotorium is a specially developed digital Brain Atlas that offers unique opportunities to explore the brain’s regions, nuclei, nerves and structures in 3D. At the same time, you can take pictures of the brain from any angle you wish to show.

“It can be hard to find good images of less common areas of the brain. Areas such as the caudate nucleus or epithalamus, for example, are in many cases poorly illustrated, and so you often have to do without good pictures of these when teaching. This new brain atlas is the ideal solution. The imaging function of the atlas significantly improves the possibility of showing exactly the view of the brain that is relevant to your teaching,” says Maria Nordfang.

International experts behind

All content on Neurotorium is continuously being updated, and new content is added. The material is reviewed annually by a faculty of 54 international experts. This ensures that the content is accurate, and of the high standard that Lundbeck Foundation and its users expect:

“Access to the best knowledge is critical for all health care providers and academic researchers. This new free on-line resource does this in a spectacular fashion for the brain and its disorders. Neurotorium provides a wide range of learning materials such as slide sets, video lectures, and explorable brain graphics that have been developed and validated by world-leading independent experts from neurology, psychiatry and neuroscience disciplines. This makes Neurotorium a unique and landmark development that will empower treatment providers and research all across the globe,” says Professor David Nutt, Chair of the Editorial Board, Neurotorium.
